Issik Kul is one of the most wonderful lakes of the world, located in the north-eastern part of Kyrgyz Republic. The area of the lake is 6236 square kilometers. The deepest point of Issik Kul is 702 meters and the average depth of the lake is 278 meters. It is surrounded by the chains of mountains in both Northern and Southern coasts Kungei Ala-Too and Teskei Ala-Too.
The other interesting fact about Issik Kul Lake is that there are more than hundred
rivers that flow into the lake, but there is not a single river that flows out of the lake. Those rivers are the biggest source of water that fill the lake and maintain its level and volume stable. One of the biggest rivers that flow into Issi Kul are Tup and Zhergalan rivers. Also there is a river called Chu that brings most of its water into Issik Kul during the spring flood. Besides rivers there is another water source that also makes contribution to remain the level of Issik Kul Lake. We are talking about underwater sources. Thus the level of Issik Kul remains stable, but it has a certain cycle.
Throughout several decades the level of this unique lake increases and decreases.

The official name of the lake on the map is “Issik Kul”, but it also has an unofficial name called “Purl of Kygryzstan”. If we take the original name of the lake and make a direct translation into English we obtain “Hot Lake”. The meaning of lake’s name can fully correspond to its properties, as it is a salty lake and does not freeze in winter time. The amount of salt in the lake is 5.6 pro miles per liter. Issik Kul Lake is the only mountainous and salty lake in the world. Besides, the largest lake has hundreds of legends. One of the legends says that a girl locked in the high tower was so sorrowed that she kept crying and crying and the city where she lived was covered by her tears.
